Post Conference Update

On Tuesday 29th November 2022 the Centre for Developmental and Complex Trauma, in collaboration with the Crisis, Disaster and Trauma Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society, held our 3rd International Trauma Informed Care Conference.

The event hosted nine international speakers, 12 UK based brief presentation speakers, two poster presentations and a 206 delegates.

Trauma frameworks continue to grow in prominence and impact. During a period of significant expansion for trauma focused diagnoses and interventions, it is important that clinicians and academics develop clinical practice approaches that apply to the heterogeneous nature of trauma needs and populations. #TIC2022 brought together global experts to offer a comprehensive clinically focused programme to provide clinicians and academics with the latest evidence and guidance to inform clinical practice and service development for the betterment of service users and healthcare workers.

Dr Vivienne McVey, CEO of St Andrew's Healthcare, offered a warm welcome to all those who joined us and Dr Annette Greenwood, Past Chair of the CDT Section of the BPS spoke on The CDT section and reflections on the field.

Conference introductions were followed by three Symposia where our experts spoke on the following subject areas:

  • Professor Julian Ford KEYNOTE - Developmental Trauma Disorder: A New Paradigm for Trauma-Informed
    Assessment
  • Professor Ad de Jongh KEYNOTE - The treatment of Complex PTSD using EMDR therapy
  • Professor Patricia Kerig KEYNOTE - Beyond self-care: Resilience to secondary traumatic stress as a professional skillset for trauma-informed organisations
  • Dr Grace W.K. Ho - Adverse childhood experiences and ICD-11 PTSD/CPTSD in East Asia
  • Dr Eva Heim - Cultural adaptation of psychological interventions for the treatment of PTSD and CPTSD
  • Professor Cornelius Katona - The mental health needs of people seeking Sanctuary
  • Professor Tine Jensen - Possible change processes in child trauma treatment
  • Dr Joseph Spinazzola - Developmental Trauma and its clinical applications
  • Dr Ruby Charak - Trauma and minority stress in LGBTQ+ populations: needs and treatment approach

Who was this event of interest to?

This annual conference is of interest those registered practitioners engaged in direct clinical practice in the area of trauma care. This includes psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health / learning disability nurses and professionals working in prison settings. The conference is also of interest to health leaders involved in policy and service leaders.

Conference Feedback

The feedback from our delegates was exceptionally positive with 100% of those surveyed reporting that they would change their work based practice as a result of attending the conference and that they had learnt something new from attending the conference!

Here are just a few of the wonderful comments from our delegates...

"Thank you so much everybody. I have learnt so much and lots to consider. What an insightful day" ... Biography:

Patricia K. Kerig, PhD received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California at Berkeley with a specialization in developmental psychopathology.  She currently is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Utah and has previously served as the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Traumatic Stress and as a Co-Director of the Center for Trauma Recovery and Juvenile Justice.  She is an author of over 200 scholarly works devoted to understanding the factors that predict risk, resilience, and recovery among adults, adolescents, children and families coping with adversity and traumatic stress. In particular, as juvenile justice systems and other systems of care increasingly become trauma-informed, she has an abiding interest in developing effective strategies to bolster resilience among staff who are exposed to secondary traumatic stress in the context of their work.

Associate Professor

Department of Psychological Science

Adversities in Childhood and Trauma Studies (ACT) Lab

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Biography:

Dr. Ruby Charak (pronouns: she/her/ella; UTRGV Ally) received her Ph.D. in Clinical and Developmental Psychology from the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2015. She is currently the director of the UTRGV Adversities in Childhood and Trauma Studies (ACT) Lab.

Dr. Charak’s research focuses on understanding the cumulative effect of exposure to multiple types of childhood adversities. These include child abuse and neglect, the related consequences of revictimization, and psychopathology, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and personality problems. Her research aims at harboring preventative strategies for reducing violence and victimization during adolescence, treating individual psychopathology, and family dysfunction.

Research Interests

Dr. Charak’s research encompasses the identification of adverse interpersonal processes, including child maltreatment, polyvictimization, revictimization across the lifespan, and traumatic stress reactions, such as PTSD in adolescents and emerging adults. She has worked extensively with geographically and racially diverse adolescents and young adults from underserved regions of the U.S. and globally. Since joining the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in 2016, she has extended her research on revictimization by focusing on adolescents and Hispanic young adults and has started to investigate technology-mediated abuse (cyber IPV) in interpersonal relationships. She has also conducted investigations into related mental health disparities in people living in low-income ethnic enclaves along the South Texas-Mexico border and among gender and sexually minoritized LGBTQ+ individuals. Her research aims at harboring preventative strategies for reducing violence and victimization during adolescence and emerging adulthood, treating individual psychopathology, and family dysfunction.

She has statistical expertise in structural equation modeling, mixture modeling and latent variable modeling and often uses these techniques in her research. Dr. Charak has served as a statistical consultant on projects funded by the United Nations International Children’s Funds (UNICEF) and the Menninger Clinic, Houston, Texas. She has started to incorporate mixed method designs in her research work with underserved communities in order to understand the nuanced and lived experiences of individuals.
