Earlier this week, the Health & Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting, reaffirmed his commitment to the Mental Health Investment Standard (MHIS), stating:
“I am committed to the Mental Health Investment Standard. I think it is really important.... I pay particular tribute to Simon Stevens, who, as effectively the head of the NHS, is the architect of the Mental Health Investment Standard.”
The MHIS ensures that NHS funding for mental health services grows at least in line with overall health spending. It's part of the NHS Long-Term Plan, which aims to improve mental health care and make it comparable to physical health services.
As the largest mental health Charity in the UK we very much welcome this announcement as it has improved people's access to mental health care no end.
We will continue to campaign for a greater focus on individuals with complex mental health needs. Prioritising these vulnerable populations is essential to tackle health inequalities and ensure that everyone can access the care they need.
