Men's Mental Health - low secure

A low secure ward for men aged 18 to 65 years old with enduring mental health problems, requiring an assertive rehabilitation focus in order to aid in recovery, (where Recovery is defined by the individual’s needs and individual optimisation of functioning). There is an element of chronicity in the presenting problems of the patient group.

Lifford is a 16 bed ward based in Birmingham which treats and cares for patients with chronic mental disorder. The approach by the MDT, in addressing the rehabilitation and recovery needs of the patients, takes on elements of positive risk-taking, within a framework of least restrictive practice.

On a day to day basis, there is very close monitoring with a detailed focus on the ‘individual’, and working with the patient alongside good levels of relational security.

The underlying assumption that Lifford adopts is that all persons are valued, and so, working from the base of active Compassionate Care, with appropriate challenge, and specialist input increase possibilities for patient recovery.

The communication within the team, in monitoring patients, and in optimising care, is essential.

Admissions criteria

Men aged between 18 and 65 years old who have a serious mental disorder or mental impairment; have behavioural difficulties that seriously compromise their physical or psychological well-being and are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.

These criteria are a guide for assessing suitability. Each patient will be individually assessed by our dedicated team.

Treatment and care

Lifford’s ethos is underpinned by the principles of recovery, rehabilitation and risk management.
A psychosocial, relational and recovery model of care will provide high levels of therapeutic care and treatment underpinned by evidence-based practice. This will encapsulate diversity awareness which will be integrated into the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of the service.
The MDT will complete a detailed formulation of the patients need and deliver interventions specifically tailored to patient need.
Lifford provides a low secure environment underpinned by the principles of risk management, supporting patients who present serious risk, absconding, suicide or vulnerability.
We exceed the recommended 25 hours of meaningful activity.

Discharge is considered at admission and our clinical and social work teams work with appropriate case managers to support a transition.
